British thread forms have a 55 degree flank angle and use sizes similar to our own pipe threads - 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, etc. General practice is to use measuring wires of "best size," i.e., a wire that contacts at the pitch line. G is the international standard shorthand for BSPP - BSP Parallel threads. R is the standard for BSPT - BSP Tapered. Parallel (G) threads are used where the 

BSP thread sizes typically are 1 pitch number higher than the NPT threads . I.e. in 1/4" pipe size, the NPT thread is 18 threads /inch; BSP is 19 threads /inch. There are other differences (in thread form for instance) as well. Bottom line is the two don't mate up. I have experience with one size only, 3" nominal.
