Flat belts operate on flat pulleys and flat pulley idlers and do not require a grooved flat belt pulley. A flat pulley idler can also be used for the rear of a traditional V-belt. One advantage of using this pulley is that in the event of over-torque, the belt may slip, thereby avoiding damage to equipment other than the belt.
