We have a full set of aluminum skids from Rockhard 4x4 and they hold up very well. Usual cons are the added weight (steel) and cost of the skids. The most "banged up" skid on ours is the connection point between the oil pan skid and the t-case skid, none of it's bad and when we removed the stock bar there it wasn't in bad shape either.

Just extend it till it touches, then unbolt the transmission mount nuts, then use your jack in the center of the skid to support it and lower it when you unbolt the frame bolts.
